Artist's Comments

My parents donated an old used monitor to me for an added christmas bonus! Whoo! This thing is huge and I'd only assume the colors are correct, because I can now actually SEE some of the darker art of the artists I love to watch! Sooooo, here's a bit more tinkering with that background idea I started AGES ago.

Not happy with the shade of yellow on the hind end, but I'll be fixing it later. Taking my time with this until I find a technique that works well for me.

Again, I am all ears for critiques and pointers in helpful tutorial direction! :D

Hmm ... that is quite a harsh pink, you might perhaps like to try the other pink and see if you like it better? This kind of warmer pink rather than the violet-y one: [link]
Both the lime outline and the pink are particularly brash/acid/clashy forms of their colour, and I find they sit uneasily on the teal background (but I have deep seated hate of blue-green, so take my opinions on it with a grain of salt - I'm decidedly biased about it and not to be trusted!).
It's not that violent colours are necessarily bad :D just that if you're having trouble with the colours, maybe that's the trouble, you know? I find it a little hard to look at honestly, it's like WHOA! lol XD ^_^;

BUT BUT I think the whole thing will look better when you have more highlights and shades - get some richness in there and it may be enough to make it work well for you :) The mane and tail SCREAM for highlights, for example (my fingers are twitching lol).

Hopefully that's helpful ^_^;;;

lol. I hear ya on the highlighting and getting shading in there. I appreciate your honest opinion. You're probably right about the colors being harsh. I have an uber-old monitor that blurs lettering now and have been having issues with lights and darks when viewing images. :( Its something I want to replace but don't have the money to. I'll trying to de-saturate the colors as much as possible while working on it. The green is supposed to be brighter, but the purples not so much. :( I also have some frills that I've worked a bit on with the background it will actually sit on. The darker green corner will have some deeper tones to it, but ya can't believe it till ya see it eh? Since you've given me such an honest response, I'll be posting more updated versions (as close to the final image) as soon as I can.

I really like your pose and overall idea for this piece of work. I do agree that with some shadowing and highlighting of the tail and mane (and a little more on the wings) it will ton the pink down enough to be slightly easier on the eyes. Now if I were you I wouldn't change the pink color....I think it adds a nice contrast to the body color and makes it stand out with its boldness. Maybe if the lime green was darkened a tad it wouldn't be so hard on the eyes. I think with some tweeking of the colors this will be amazing because I :love: it already!

Just a quick reply cos I'm at work, but that looks a ton better!
